(no subject)

Okay, so I'm trying to get my head around military ranks and titles for a story I'm researching for. If someone could help me with this, that'd be great.

1. So, Master Sergeant is a rank of the enlisted or NCO, correct? Since (to my understanding) it's a different ranking to that of officers, how does it compare in authority to the Rank of Lieutenant and Colonel (I'm guessing in the middle, but I have no idea)?

2 NCO - Non-Commisioned Officer. What, does that mean they're not really in the military? I've tried to understand what the internet has given me, but it's a bunch of military expressions and facts that I don't understand. So could someone, in plain English, tell me how the NCO's fit into the military and how they are different from officers?

3. What are some of the most commoly used (hand held) firearms given to soldiers in combat? Do they vary according to rank (I don't see why they would, but if they did it'd be good to know)?

Thanks in advance.
